ABOUT - The
Great Man Made River (GMMR)
The authority has been entrusted with the implementation and operation of the worlds largest pre-stressed concrete pipe project -The Great Man- Made River Project (GMRP), which, since it's conception in 1984 has grown to include almost 4,000 km (2,485 miles) of mainly 4 meter diameter pre stressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP). Eventually over 6.0 million m3 (5260 acre-feet) of water will be conveyed every day from well fields deep in the Sahara desert to the population centers that are concentrated on the northern coastal strip.
The
Great Man Made River Authority was established by law No. 11/1983
by the general peoples congress to implement and manage The Great
Man Made River Project.
Funding
law No. 10, issued by the general peoples congress in 1983 with
subsequent additions in later years, governs the funding of The
Great Man Made River Project.
The
majority of contribution is directly funded by the Libyan people in
the form of levies on fuel, tobacco and international travel. The
remainder is funded by loans from banks and participation by the
general Treasury.
The total
installed cost to date for phase I is $ 5.53 billion, $ 8.05
billion for phase II
and $ 6.0
billion for phase III. Phase III inauguraded by Brother leader
Muammar Al Gaddafi 2010.

government started the largest civil engineering project ever
undertaken in the world that was scheduled to complete within
twenty years. The project, popularly known as the Great Man
Made River Project (GMMRP), when fully completed can supply a total
of 6,500,000m³ of freshwater per day to most northern Libya cities
bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Eighty percent of this water
is allocated for agricultural activities while the remaining is for
